Federal Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today on the attacks on the United States’ diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya:
“I condemn the violent attacks on the United States’ diplomatic missions in Cairo and Benghazi in the strongest possible terms.
I urge the Egyptian and Libyan Governments to fully guarantee the security of embassies and consulates in their countries.
We mourn the officer at the US consulate in Benghazi who was killed yesterday. Our sympathy goes out to his friends and loved ones.
Yesterday’s events in Cairo and Benghazi make abundantly clear what religious fanaticism can lead to.”
