Welcome
Germany and Ukraine: Bilateral relations
Since 24 February 2022, the Russian Federation has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law.
In close cooperation with its European and international partners, Germany – in the form of political, humanitarian, financial and military support – is providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine in its legitimate self-defence. In both civilian and military terms, Germany is Ukraine’s largest European supporter and, ahead of Poland, is also the largest host country of Ukrainian refugees. Together with its partners, Germany is working to step up the pressure on Russia with the aim of bringing about a ceasefire and achieving durable peace. On 16 February 2024, Germany and Ukraine signed a wide-ranging bilateral agreement on security cooperation and long-term support that, for example, has led to greater arms industry cooperation.
Germany is supporting Ukraine on its path towards the European Union. Accession negotiations were officially opened on 25 June 2024.
