Peru and Germany enjoy close and amicable political ties. Dialogue is intensive, both bilaterally and in multilateral forums.

Four political foundations (Friedrich Ebert, Friedrich Naumann, Hanns Siedel and Konrad Adenauer) have offices in Peru.

Peru’s economic growth over more than 20 years was interrupted by the COVID‑19 pandemic. However, Peru recovered in 2021 with a growth rate of 13%. In 2022 growth was around 2.7%.

The largest German investment in Peru is the extension of Lima airport by Fraport AG. German companies are above all active and successful in the delivery sector, particularly in the field of technology.

Peru’s GDP is made up of services – mainly tourism (54%), mining and industry (26%), agriculture (7%) as well as the construction sector (6%).

In the field of development cooperation, Germany has been working with Peru for the last 60 years and is the largest European donor. Development cooperation centres around five spheres: good governance, climate action and adaptation to climate change, sustainable urban development, biodiversity and forest conservation. The main focus is on cooperation on climate action and environmental protection, based on the global agenda for sustainable development and national contributions to climate protection, as well as alignment with international standards as part of Peru’s OECD accession process. During the development policy intergovernmental negotiations in 2022, a political declaration on the climate and development partnership with Peru was signed – the first with a Latin American country. The aim is to intensify strategic cooperation aimed at sustainable environmental and climate-related reforms.

In the field of culture, the priorities are teaching German as a foreign language (three German schools, 21 other schools teaching German; a total of some 18,500 pupils learning German) and academic exchange (2021: 450 German Academic Exchange Service scholarships for Peruvian nationals and a total of 1664 Peruvian students in Germany).

There is a Goethe-Institut in Lima and a German-Peruvian culture institute in Arequipa and Cusco.
