Minister of State for Europe visits Rome

02.10.2018 - Press release

On 4 October 2018, Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth will hold talks in Rome with his counterpart Minister of European Affairs Paola Savona, as well as with the chairs and the members of the European Union affairs committees of the Italian Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and the chair of the foreign affairs committee of the Chamber of Deputies.

The Minister of State for Europe will also meet with former Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and other members of the opposition Democratic Party (PD), as well as with representatives of the Roma minority.

Michael Roth will join Nathalie Tocci of the renowned Italian think tank IAI (Istituto Affari Internazionali) for a panel discussion with students and prominent figures in politics, academia and the media that will focus on the outlook for a united Europe.

Prior to his departure, Minister of State Roth said:

With my visit, I want to strengthen and deepen our relations with the new Italian Government and both chambers of parliament. Good cooperation with the important EU founding member Italy is indispensable for our common future in Europe. Italy is at the heart of Europe, and that is its rightful place. Against the background of growing Euroscepticism in Italy, I believe it is very important that I engage directly in a discussion with young Italian men and women. It is my aim to underscore Italy and Germany’s shared responsibility with regard to Europe.
