21.04.2020 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (21 April) following the video conference between Foreign Minister Maas and Foreign Minister Safadi of Jordan:

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi today. They held a video conference instead of meeting in person at the second session of the German-Jordanian Strategic Dialogue, which had been scheduled to take place in Berlin today. Their conversation focused on the situation in the Middle East and the impact of the corona crisis. Foreign Minister Maas thanked Jordan for its active participation in the Alliance for Multilateralism. He stated that Germany would continue to support the region by providing comprehensive humanitarian assistance, above all for the Syrian refugees in the region.

The two Ministers also spoke about the Middle East and warned of the consequences that any unilateral moves to annexe territory could have for the peace process. They reaffirmed their commitment to a negotiated two-state solution. They also talked about the situation in Syria, Iraq and Libya. They expressed their concern about the ongoing fighting near Tripoli and discussed ways of upholding the humanitarian ceasefire and the UN arms embargo.
