Commenting on the summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong un, Foreign Minister Maas today (12 June) said:
Today’s summit meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong un is a first step in the right direction. After more than 70 years of confrontation, the two sides have reached out to each other. It is good that the spiral of escalation we saw in 2017 seems to have been broken for now. However, this must be followed up with concrete, practical results.
I hope that today’s meeting has laid good foundations for entering into a serious, reliable process of negotiations on North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes. The process embarked upon must lead to the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of North Korea. Pyongyang must respond to the international community’s concerns. That is the only way in the end to bring tangible improvements to the lives of the people in North Korea. Germany remains willing to support this process.
