A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (1 February) on the formation of a new government in Lebanon:
We congratulate Lebanon on reaching agreement regarding a new national unity government. Arriving at a compromise that all parties can support was undoubtedly a major challenge. The fact that this has now been done is a remarkable achievement of all actors involved.
The agreement comes at a time when Lebanon needs political leadership more than ever. The new government must now rapidly address the country’s pressing problems. There can be no further delay. This applies in particular to implementation of the reforms that were already agreed in the spring of 2018 at the CEDRE Conference in Paris, the aim of which is to overcome the country’s economic and political standstill.
As a partner and through continued support, Germany stands firmly by Lebanon’s side as the country works to strengthen its institutions and tackle the tasks that lie ahead.
