Foreign Minister Wadephul on the eve of the 62nd Munich Security Conference

12.02.2026 - Press release

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul issued the following statement today (12 February 2026) on the eve of the 62nd Munich Security Conference:

In times of increasing crises and conflicts, growing military strength and committed diplomacy are our most important security resources. In times of growing uncertainty, focusing on our core interests and values is our fundamental guiding principle. In times of global upheaval and the resurgence of power politics, political reliability and commitment to a stable, rules-based international order are our greatest assets.

That is precisely what German foreign and security policy stands for. Being firmly anchored in Europe has brought us far more than prosperity. We are aware of Europe’s strength – but we are also aware that, in view of the existential challenge our continent faces from Russia, a concerted effort is needed to take on more responsibility for our security. We know how vitally important it is to be part of the transatlantic community, in which we have great confidence. We will do everything we can to keep the transatlantic bond strong. And we are actively working to strengthen old partnerships and gain new partners around the globe.

Like no other forum, the Munich Security Conference is once again the international focal point for examining all these questions. Once again here in Munich, we will look in the coming days at the challenges that no single country can effectively tackle alone. These challenges include the future of a sovereign Ukraine, our security in Europe, transatlantic relations, the situation in the Middle East, the strengthening of global partnerships – responsibility, strength, reliability and stability. Germany will continue to make an active contribution to all of this.
