Statement by Foreign Minister Wadephul on the meeting of German and American mayors

09.10.2025 - Press release

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul today (9 October 2025) issued the following statement on the occasion of a round table bringing together mayors from Germany and the United States in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen on 9 and 10 October:

Germany and the United States have some 200 town twinnings. These partnerships form a cooperative network comprising school exchanges, academic and economic cooperation and personal friendships between Germans and Americans. Town twinnings from Los Angeles to Berlin, from Palo Alto to Heidelberg, and from Kansas City to Hanover form the very core of our relations with the United States – our most important partner country outside Europe. Therefore I am very pleased that the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen has with our support invited more than 20 mayors and city representatives to this gathering at Bremen’s town hall.

The mayors have a great deal to discuss in Bremen. Because cities, be they big or small, are catalysts of economic growth; they find innovative, tailor-made, and local solutions to global problems. And cities are on the front line when it comes to addressing new challenges – whether it be handling health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, dealing with climate-induced heat waves, transitioning to low-emission mobility or how to ward off cyberattacks: At the same time, cities are impacted by, and are actors of, international politics.

Besides the big questions, small-scale solutions are key, and mayors are in close touch with their constituents. They are key when it comes to policies having the desired effect and government institutions enjoying the trust of the people. On both sides of the Atlantic, mayors in so many cities are setting excellent examples of good governance. We want to shine a spotlight on this and give them recognition, because their work forms the basis of mutual trust and fosters new partnerships.

Background information:

The round table of mayors from the United States and Germany, taking place in Bremen on 9 and 10 October, serves as a reciprocal invitation following the inaugural round table of mayors that took place in New York on 14 June 2024. There are around 200 German-American town twinnings, representing the largest number of such partnerships outside the European Union.

The round table forms part of the Urban Diplomacy Exchange programme implemented by Engagement Global, on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office and the German Association of Cities. Its objective is to strengthen German-American town twinnings, intensify the exchange of ideas on current urban challenges and deepen the bonds of transatlantic friendship. During the round table in Bremen, mayors will exchange views on topics including housing and urbanisation, innovation and digitisation, and smart solutions for large-scale gatherings and sporting events.
