Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the “very fragile situation” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region

06.04.2016 - Press release

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke today (6 April) at a press conference with his Uruguayan counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa about his talks this morning with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and the ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In response to a question, he stated:

The situation there is very fragile at present. Therefore, my message this morning when talking to the Armenian side was: anyone who simply opts to maintain the current status quo is risking recurring eruptions of violence at irregular intervals.

There are therefore two or three things which we are following in a long series of efforts which have just got off the ground. First, endeavours to ensure that the parties to this conflict refrain from engaging in renewed military action on a durable basis. Second, endeavours to start a process with stabilising or confidence-building measures, thus also to prepare the way for – hopefully in the not too distant future – further negotiations within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on the future status of this region.
