Foreign Minister Steinmeier condemns bombing in Ankara
On 10 October Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on the bomb attack on a rally in Ankara:
This brutal terrorist attack on peaceful demonstrators is also an attack on the democratic process in Turkey, which I condemn in the strongest possible terms. The perpetrators are clearly aiming to spread fear and intimidation and to incite hatred and discord in the run‑up to the elections. This cannot be allowed to happen.
All groups in Turkey who want peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in society are now called upon to stand shoulder to shoulder and to prevent further escalation. I trust that the forces of democracy which are deeply rooted in Turkish society will withstand this latest attack.
Our thoughts today are with the families of the victims and with the many injured.
