Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement on 25 May concerning Andrzej Duda’s election as the new Polish President:
I congratulate Andrzej Duda on his election as President of Poland. Almost a quarter of a century after the conclusion of the German-Polish Treaty on Good‑Neighbourliness of 1991, relations between our two countries are closer and more trustful than ever before. We see this on a daily basis in our political contacts, in our economic relations and in the intensity of the exchange between our civil societies. Close German-Polish cooperation is key to strengthening the European Union and to ensuring a joint approach to urgent international issues.
