Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (14 May) in response to the major mining disaster in western Turkey. The latest reports estimate that more than 200 people have lost their lives.
I am devastated at the terrible accident in the Turkish coal mine, which has claimed so many victims. My deepest sympathy goes to those who have lost loved ones, and all who have been injured have my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Our thoughts are also with the miners who are still trapped. We hope that they too can be rescued. Germany stands ready to help if Turkey so wishes.
