Foreign Minister Westerwelle: Nobel Peace Prize a further boost for disarmament

11.10.2013 - Press release

Speaking today (11 October) in Kyiv, Foreign Minister Westerwelle commented as follows on the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision:

This Nobel Peace Prize will be a further boost for global disarmament. This decision by the Norwegian Nobel Committee will encourage people everywhere who are striving to promote disarmament and stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is a deserved tribute to its many years of successful and courageous work in this key disarmament area.

With the work it is doing right now in Syria, the OPCW is making an immensely important contribution to the efforts to establish control over and destroy chemical weapons. Germany is supporting the OPCW’s activities in Syria and throughout the world in every way it can.
