Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today (19 April) on the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw ghetto uprising:
We commemorate today the courageous men and women who stood up to their oppressors in Warsaw 70 years ago.
The inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto knew how slim their chances of success were. And yet they bravely and fearlessly seized their opportunity to rebel against a barbaric and repressive regime, making their resistance plain to the world.
We remember with great humility the suffering, the sacrifice and the desire for freedom of the people in the Warsaw ghetto.
