In Berlin today (1 April), Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement on the by-elections in Myanmar today:
“Today’s elections in Myanmar constitute a historic step towards democracy and national reconciliation.
The candidacy and election of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi is an encouragement for all those who campaign for democratic progress in Myanmar.
I call upon those responsible in Rangoon to continue along the path of reform.
Europe will honour further progress with cooperation.”
At Foreign Minister Westerwelle’s request, Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy, monitored the conduct of elections on the ground. He shared his first impressions with Foreign Minister Westerwelle on the phone today.
