Federal Minister Westerwelle welcomes the outcome of the local referendum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics
Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin this evening (8 May) on the outcome of the local referendum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics:
“The ”yes“ vote by the citizens of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has given the bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics a further boost.
By so successfully organizing the Skiing World Championship last winter, Garmisch-Partenkirchen demonstrated in an impressive fashion that it is well-equipped to host major sporting events.
The 2018 Winter Olympics in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen would provide a great opportunity for Germany to showcase itself once more on the international stage as a good host and an outward-looking country.
As Federal Foreign Minister I will make every effort, both at home and abroad, to bring the 2018 Olympic Games to Germany.”
