In January 2026, Germany formally recognised Niue as an independent state, and diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on 3 February 2026 at a meeting in Auckland between Foreign Minister Wadephul and Prime Minister Tagelagi.

Regional projects in the Pacific co-funded by Germany include Niue – for example, “Anpassung an den Klimawandel in der Pazifikregion – Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Region (CCCPR)”, a regional project of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Moreover, Germany indirectly supports Niue through its contributions to the European Development Fund.
