Germany and Lesotho: Bilateral relations

31.03.2026 - Article

Even after the closure of the German Embassy in Maseru in 1994, Lesotho maintained an embassy in Berlin. At the beginning of 2005, Germany and France opened a joint consular office in the Alliance Française building in Maseru. Since 2024, Germany has again had an honorary consul in Maseru. A regular dialogue with government and civil society in Lesotho also takes place within the framework of EU consultations.

Following his first official visit to Germany in April 2013, King Letsie III returned to the country in 2023 and 2025 with delegation members including Foreign Minister Lejone. In December 2024, Federal President Steinmeier became the first German head of state to visit Lesotho. Prior to that, in October, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Katja Keul took part in celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the Basotho Nation in Lesotho.

Germany is engaged in Lesotho as part of regional cooperation with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and via the EU. Cooperation focuses on water management, the development of renewable energies, the expansion of regional value chains and support for trade, social security systems and municipal development. In addition, non-governmental agencies are active in Lesotho with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The GIZ has an office in Maseru. A cultural preservation project is being carried out in cooperation with an archive in Morija.

German trade with Lesotho has to date been limited. The Government of Lesotho is lobbying for investment from Germany. Trade is possible via the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement.

In higher education, there is cooperation with the country’s only university, the National University of Lesotho, through German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarships.
