Germany and Fiji: Bilateral relations

The Federal Republic of Germany and Fiji have maintained diplomatic relations since 1 August 1973. On 19 August 2023, Germany opened an Embassy in Fiji.

Germany and Fiji share common interests in combatting the climate crisis. Both are committed to a high level of ambition in international climate negotiations. In 2017, the UN Climate Change Conference COP23 was jointly organised by Fiji and Germany, taking place in Bonn under the Presidency of Fiji. Fiji is a member of the Group of Friends on Climate and Security in the United Nations, founded by Germany and Nauru.Germany supports the development of the Pacific island nation through its contributions to the European Union’s Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) – until 2021, the European Development Fund (EDF). It also implements microprojects in the spheres of infrastructure, education and vocational training, as well as health, the advancement of women and combating domestic violence.

Bilateral trade relations are modest: German exports in 2023 amounted to 24.62 million euro, while the value of imports to Germany totalled 2.109 million euro (source: DESTATIS).
