Germany and Central African Republic: Bilateral relations

27.02.2026 - Article

Relations between Germany and the Central African Republic are friendly.

German engagement in the Central African Republic takes the form of seconding staff to the hybrid Special Criminal Court in Bangui to address war crimes and crimes against humanity. Furthermore, between 2021 and 2025, the Federal Foreign Office made some 143.5 million euro available for humanitarian assistance.

Germany is also active in the field of peacebuilding in the country. Since 2020, it has paid over 200 million euro into the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, which currently finances several projects in the Central African Republic with a total volume of around 23 million US dollars, including projects to promote reconciliation in society and the reintegration of refugees, to prevent armed (border) conflicts and to support women and young people. The UN Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund, to which Germany has contributed a total of over 90 million euro since 2019, is also engaged in promoting female-led civil society organisations in the Central African Republic.

Germany closed its Embassy in the capital Bangui in 1997. Since then, the German Embassy in Yaoundé, Cameroon, has been responsible for the country. The Central African Republic maintains relations with Germany via its Embassy in Paris.
