The main pillars of cooperation are economic relations in the areas of infrastructure and energy, as well as relations in the fields of culture and science.

In 2025, Angola celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its independence and held the Chair of the African Union. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier travelled to the Republic of Angola from 4 to 6 November 2025. He was the first German President to visit the country. A few weeks later, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended the seventh African Union-European Union Summit in Luanda.

In the sphere of German development cooperation, Angola has been participating in regional projects only since 2012. This includes development cooperation with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with a focus on cross-border water management and the transborder protection and use of natural resources, as well as financial cooperation projects.

More than 2000 Angolan citizens studied or received technical training in the GDR. This group continues to have an affinity with Germany and the German language. A considerable number of Angolans have returned to their country with an excellent knowledge of German and with dual citizenship. A German-Angolan cultural agreement has been in force since August 2012 and forms the legal basis for the Goethe-Institut in Angola, which opened in 2009.
