A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement on 28 December 2015 on the agreement reached between Japan and the Republic of Korea on the establishment of a fund for the victims of forced prostitution during the Second World War (“comfort women”):

The German Government welcomes the agreement between the Governments of Japan and the Republic of Korea on the victims of forced prostitution during the Second World War. Both sides have agreed on a compromise that will help to heal the suffering and wounds of the mainly Korean victims of forced prostitution by the Japanese military. At the same time, this compromise can pave the way to a new era in Japanese-Korean relations.
