26.10.2010 - Press release

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Dervish Eroğlu, met today (26 October) for talks at the German Bundestag.

Their discussion focused mainly on negotiations on the reunification of the island of Cyprus, which has been divided since 1974. Foreign Minister Westerwelle called on Mr Eroğlu to demonstrate the greatest possible flexibility in order to conclude these negotiations successfully.

Following the meeting, Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today in Berlin:

“Germany takes the hopes and concerns of Cypriots very seriously. We want to help pave the way to freedom and unity for the island. Both Turkish and Greek Cypriots should carry out the negotiations on reunification seriously and with the true intention of reuniting. This requires willingness to compromise, and it demands unwavering determination to find a solution. The life prospects of all the people of Cyprus are at stake here.”
