Federal Foreign Office on the announcement of a temporary ceasefire by Afghan President Ghani

07.06.2018 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (7 June) on the announcement of a temporary ceasefire by Afghan President Ghani to coincide with the end of Ramadan:

Germany welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire by Afghan President Ghani. Following his offer to hold talks with the Taliban, this is now a further important step towards peace. We expressly welcome and support this path towards political reconciliation. At the same time, we call on the Taliban to follow Ghani’s example and adhere to the ceasefire. In many parts of Afghanistan, families long to be able to experience the end of Ramadan and Eid without fear.

The international community is united in helping to bring about an Afghan led peace process. Only in this way can a stop finally be put to violence and terrorism and the constitutional rights of everyone in Afghanistan be protected. Our fervent wish for the end of Ramadan is that this will succeed.

Background information:

Afghan President Ghani has announced a ceasefire that will start on 12 June and last several days and called on the Afghan security forces to halt all offensive operations against the Taliban. Da’esh, al Qaida and other international terrorist networks are excluded from the ceasefire.
