The new prison sentence handed down to Alexei Navalny today is a blatant act of arbitrariness. It is the latest instance of the systematic instrumentalisation of the Russian justice system against dissidents and the political opposition. The proceedings practically took place behind closed doors. Fundamental rule of law principles were disregarded and no sound evidence of any kind was presented. The German Government renews its call for Navalny’s immediate release.
