We condemn the outbreak of violence in the Syrian regions of Tartus, Latakia and Homs. Reports of the killing of civilians and prisoners are shocking. The transitional government has a responsibility to prevent further attacks, to investigate the incidents and to hold those responsible to account. We urgently call upon all sides to put an end to the violence.

That is the only way for peace to be established in society following the decades-long Assad reign of terror and for an inclusive political process to be embarked upon, which is so crucial for lasting peace in Syria and the stabilisation of the country. The future of the country must lie in the hands of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic background, religion or gender, without any foreign destabilisation attempts.
