A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (26 March):
The fact that the conflicting parties in eastern Ukraine have agreed to renew the ceasefire over Easter sends an important message. The ceasefire will enter into force on Good Friday.
We very much welcome this development, as the people in the conflict zone face great hardship. They urgently need a reduction in the fighting and a resilient ceasefire.
It is now crucial to adhere to the ceasefire. However, it is also important that it – as we have repeatedly urged – finally be stabilised by concrete steps, including the withdrawal of heavy weapons, the disengagement of troops and mine clearance.
We call on all sides to uphold the agreement and take further steps to implement the Minsk agreements.
