We condemn the terrible massacre of members of the Peulh ethnic group in the vicinity of Mopti that claimed over 130 lives, including women and children, in the strongest possible terms. We mourn the victims together with their families and wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.

This fresh outbreak of violence must not remain without consequences. The spiral of violence in central Mali must be broken and the perpetrators brought to justice. To this end, it is important for the Malian state to assume responsibility for ensuring security in the region. Germany stands ready to support Mali’s efforts in this regard.
