Federal Foreign Office on the situation in Mali

27.08.2020 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (27 August) on the release of Mali’s ousted President Keïta:

We welcome the release of ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and also call for the release of all further individuals detained in the course of the coup. We call to mind the fact that Mali must return to a constitutional order as soon as possible, one that is founded on democratic structures. This also includes the rapid transition to a civilian government to prepare the ground for fresh elections.

Background information

A military council seized power following a coup in Mali on 18 August. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is negotiating with those involved in the coup and is endeavouring to facilitate a swift return to the constitutional order. ECOWAS is being supported in this task by the international community and also by the Federal Government.
