Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (7 June) prior to his departure for New York:
Germany is ready to assume responsibility once more for peacefully resolving crises as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council. Particularly at the current time, we need a United Nations that is strong and able to act.
In my many talks in recent months, I have experienced much support and encouragement for our plans. Now I am looking forward to the election and hope for a good result.
