Foreign Minister Heiko Maas gave the following statement today (9 November) on the Presidential election in the United States:
We congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on winning the election and look forward to working with the next administration in the United States. We will only be able to solve many international challenges if we join our forces. We are committed to invest in this cooperation.
Our offer stands: for a relaunch in transatlantic relations, for a “New Deal”. Therefore, once the election process has been concluded, we will approach the new administration. We intend to put forward concrete proposals on how we can close ranks as a transatlantic community – be it with regard to players such as China, climate protection or the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the election campaign, Joe Biden made it clear that he believes in Team Play when it comes to the United States on international stage instead of acting by its own. We want the West to play as a team again. Only as a team will we effectively assert our shared values worldwide and have the necessary clout. We as Europeans are prepared to enhance our investment into this partnership.
