Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (28 December) on the death of the Israeli writer and journalist Amos Oz:
Today, we have lost not only a great Israeli writer who captivated countless people in Germany, too, with his stories, but also a brave and unshakeable advocate of peace in the Middle East. In his outstanding literary works, Amos Oz always also portrayed contemporary life in Israel; he challenged apparent certainties and invited us to take a fresh look at things. Time and again, his wise words and admonitions made us think and reminded us that the only way to attain peace is to fight for it. We will miss Amos Oz very much.
