Foreign Minister Maas on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA)

08.05.2019 - Press release

Foreign Minister Maas issued the following statement in Berlin today (8 May) on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA)“

We noted Iran’s announcements with great concern and we will now examine them very closely. To this end, we are in contact with the remaining participants in the nuclear agreement.
Our position remains that we want to uphold the agreement, particularly in order to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The nuclear agreement is key to the international nonproliferation regime and also to our national and joint European security.

We do not agree with the step taken by the Iranian Government today.
Our message remains unambiguous: we and our partners are still fully committed to the nuclear agreement. We therefore expect Iran to implement the agreement in its entirety and without any exceptions.
The standard we apply for this continues to be the assessment of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). To date it has always confirmed that Iran is fully complying with the agreement.
It also goes without saying that we do not need any escalation in the region.

It is now crucial that no steps are taken which could jeopardise regional stability and security.
That also applies to Iran’s role in the region – for example in Syria and in Yemen – as well as to Iran’s missile programme, which we consider to be very problematic.
At the same time, it has to be reiterated that even after the withdrawal of the United States, we want to uphold the agreement and are prepared to continue down this path with the other participants.
For that to happen, it is important that Iran continues to comply with the established formats and mechanisms of the nuclear agreement.
