Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (16 April) on the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral:
The fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral has hit France and Europe in the heart. We extend our utmost sympathy and solidarity to our French friends.
We would be happy to offer France any support it wishes to have. Specialists in France and Germany already work very closely together. If France would like to make use of this network, we stand ready to help. Friends help where they are needed and where they can.
The French President’s appeal for help has my full support. Less than 200 years ago, a restoration campaign saved Notre-Dame from demolition. The famous novel by Victor Hugo and the support by the people of France were instrumental in this campaign. All of Europe stands with France today.
