Federal Foreign Office on yesterday’s telephone call between Foreign Minister Maas and his Italian counterpart Moavero
A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (20 August) on the telephone call between Foreign Minister Maas and his Italian counterpart Moavero:
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke on the phone yesterday with his Italian counterpart Enzo Moavero about migration in the Mediterranean and the disembarkation of rescued persons. Both ministers agreed that there was an urgent need to achieve a European solution that is fair and workable for all member states and that will enable us to move beyond the current piecemeal solutions. With a view to the forthcoming meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Helsinki on 29 and 30 August, both Foreign Ministers agreed to discuss the issue again with their counterparts. The aim must be to achieve a European solution based on the principle of solidarity and shared responsibility as swiftly as possible.
