I am relieved that the travel ban imposed on Meşale Tolu has now been lifted by the Turkish judiciary. Even though her case is still pending, this is good news for Ms Tolu and a step towards improving our relations with Turkey. However, it is also clear that more remains to be done. We continue to take a critical view of many aspects concerning the rule of law in Turkey and address these concerns openly with our Turkish interlocutors. This applies in particular to the ongoing detentions. At least seven Germans are currently being held in prison on political grounds that are incomprehensible to us.
