Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement on the beginning of the sixth round of nuclear talks in Vienna on 12 June:
We are doing everything in our power to ensure that this round of negotiations is the last. But there is no guarantee. Because the home stretch is where we must resolve the toughest challenges and the most sensitive issues. Despite the fact that the US and Iran have only engaged in indirect talks, we have already made fair progress on this difficult path. That shows just how seriously all parties are taking the matter. But the coming days will once again require a great deal of flexibility and pragmatism – from everyone involved. It is in nobody’s interests to play for time at this stage!
