Foreign Minister Maas issued the following statement today (28 February) on the current situation in Idlib, Syria:
We condemn the continuing attacks by the Syrian regime and its Russian allies in northern Syria. Last night’s events highlight the considerable risk of a further military escalation.
Our sympathy goes out to our Turkish partners, in particular to those injured as well as to the families and friends of the victims.
We are running out of time. We need a humanitarian ceasefire for Idlib to pave the way for renewed political talks. We are engaged in dialogue with all sides to this end. At our initiative, the UN Security Council will discuss the current situation in a special session today.
