Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (22 July) on the death of Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency:
I am very sad to learn of Yukiya Amano’s death.
Mr Amano led the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in eventful and challenging times. He met this responsibility with the greatest possible commitment, professionalism and impartiality. The IAEA’s monitoring of the JCPOA was an example of that. Director General Amano’s tireless efforts to raise the profile of the Non-Proliferation Treaty in the United Nations Security Council will always stand out in my memory.
Mr Amano made the IAEA stronger. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends.
