Statement by Foreign Minister Maas on today’s handover of the Presidency of the Goethe-Institut

13.11.2020 - Press release

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (13 November 2020) on Carola Lentz’s assumption of the office of President of the Goethe-Institut and on the official farewell for her predecessor, Klaus-Dieter Lehmann:

Over the past twelve years, Klaus-Dieter Lehmann left his mark on the Goethe-Institut. It is befitting that the end of his Presidency falls into Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union: Under his leadership, a strong commitment to Europe was the foundation on which the Goethe-Institut built its global success story. Carola Lentz succeeds him at a time when international cultural cooperation is called on more than ever to foster trust and understanding through active partnership between people and societies. We have a shared responsibility to ensure a bright future for international cultural relations.

Background information:

The Goethe-Institut is the largest intermediary organisation in the field of cultural relations and education policy. Its network comprises 157 branches abroad and numerous partner institutions with approximately 1000 points of contact worldwide.
