At the close of the first day of the High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region, a Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement today (3 September):
More than 70 states, international organisations and civil society actors came together at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin today to discuss humanitarian assistance, stabilisation and development cooperation in the Lake Chad region.
The participants announced that they would make available a total of 2.17 billion US dollars for the Lake Chad region in the coming years. Development banks pledged an additional 467 million US dollars in low interest loans.
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated,
I am delighted with the total sum announced by the conference participants today. This conference shows what is possible when we work together.
Maas announced that Germany would make available an additional 100 million euros for humanitarian assistance in the region until 2020. What is more, Germany would provide 40 million euros in funding for stabilisation and prevention – of which around 30 million euros are new commitments. Germany is also active in the region in the sphere of development cooperation: the German Government is currently implementing programmes to the tune of around 220 million euros and new projects are planned.
