Federal Foreign Office on the acquittal in Turkey of Osman Kavala and eight co-defendants

18.02.2020 - Press release

The Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (18 February) on the acquittal in Turkey of Osman Kavala and eight co-defendants:

We are relieved that the long period of uncertainty and detention for the accused and their families is now over. The acquittal today of Osman Kavala and his eight co-defendants in Turkey is good news. We now also expect a speedy end to proceedings against the other seven accused, who are abroad. The Federal Government is still following closely the Büyükada trial against Taner Kilic and the Istanbul 10, which continues tomorrow.

A strong, courageous and independent civil society is vital for a pluralistic society and vibrant democratic values. Freedom of expression and the press, as well as the preservation of the freedom to engage in culture are pillars on which democracies must firmly rest. The Federal Government will therefore continue its commitment to ensuring respect for human rights in Europe and across the world.
