A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (12 November) on the situation in Israel and in the Gaza Strip:
The German Government is extremely concerned about the situation in southern Israel and in the Gaza Strip. In the wake of an Israeli operation against one of the leaders of the terrorist organisation Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in the Gaza Strip, more than 100 rockets have been fired at Israeli cities from the Gaza Strip during the last few hours. We condemn this rocket attack in the strongest possible terms. There can be no justification for violence against innocent civilians.
In the current fragile situation, absolute priority must be given to adopting a level-headed approach and to undertaking serious efforts to bring about a de-escalation. To this end, we call for the greatest possible restraint and an end to the violence. We strongly support the mediation efforts of Egypt and the United Nations.
