Statement by the Federal Foreign Office on the situation in the Gaza Strip
A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (31 March) on the situation in the Gaza Strip:
The Federal Government is extremely concerned about the clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces on the border to Israel, in which at least 15 Palestinians have been killed and many others injured. We urgently appeal to all parties to refrain from everything that would lead to further escalation and once again jeopardise human lives. Exercising the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest must not be exploited and used to violate Israel's legitimate security interests on the border to the Palestinian territories. At the same time, the defence of these legitimate interests must remain proportionate.
This incident shows once again how crucial it is for the two sides to resume negotiations. That is the only way to find a solution allowing all people between the Mediterranean and Jordan to live their lives in dignity and self-determination.
