A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (4 July) on the situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories:
We are following the situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories with great concern.
We condemn today’s terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in the strongest possible terms. Israel, like every state, has the right to defend itself against terror.
Israel’s military operation in the Jenin refugee camp, which has been under way for two days now, must respect the principle of proportionality under international law. The protection of civilians must always be the top priority, and adequate access for humanitarian aid workers must be ensured. All those who bear responsibility in this situation should now do everything in their power to calm the tense security situation and prevent further violence. Without a political solution to the conflict, it will not be possible to address the root causes of the violence.
