A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (2 May):
Following yesterday’s failure on the part of the country’s Parliament to elect a new Prime Minister, we are relieved that the protests and demonstrations have remained peaceful so far.
We will continue to follow events very closely and call on those responsible, as well as the security forces and the demonstrators to continue to exercise restraint. All sides should now seek to enter into a broad-based dialogue to form a new government via constitutional means that represents the interests of all Armenians.
In this situation, it is important that both the current ruling party and the opposition commit to a constitutional and peaceful solution to the current situation. We hope that further developments in Armenia will take into account citizens’ hopes and expectations for the political transformation, i.e. the transition to a parliamentary system.
Germany will continue to assist Armenia in the creation of a democratic society and the continuation of its reform policy.
