Human Rights Commissioner Amtsberg on the continuation of the legal proceedings against Osman Kavala and his co-defendants

21.02.2022 - Press release

The Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Assistance at the Federal Foreign Office, Luise Amtsberg, issues the following statement on the continuation of the legal proceedings against Osman Kavala and his co-defendants in Turkey on 21 February:

The rule of law means trust in the effective protection of each and every individual against state arbitrariness. The continuing detention of Osman Kavala in Turkey has been eroding this trust for over four years now, so that the European Court of Human Rights must now re-examine the case once again in infringement proceedings.

It falls to Turkey to meet its obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights, and it would be well advised to do so. I will follow the upcoming proceedings and further developments firm in this belief.
