It was with dismay that we learned that Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to eight years in prison and 70 lashes. Narges Mohammadi’s peaceful campaign for women’s rights and the improvement of the human rights situation in Iran, in particular for the abolition of the death penalty, is not a criminal offence. We are extremely concerned that detention in Quarchak Prison may further worsen her health. We call on Iran’s political leaders to comply with the country’s obligations under international law and to release Narges Mohammadi immediately.
