Federal Foreign Office on recent developments in Gaza
A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (17 May) on recent developments in Gaza:
The launch of the IDF’s new ground offensive in Gaza is cause for deep concern - with regard to both Israel's strategic goals and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Like every state, Israel has the right to defend itself, within the boundaries of international law. But the current campaign could jeopardise the lives of the remaining hostages, including German citizens, who after almost 600 days in Hamas dungeons are still fearing for their lives. A large-scale military offensive also entails the risk that the catastrophic humanitarian situation for the population in Gaza and the situation of the remaining hostages will continue to deteriorate and that the prospect of an urgently needed long-term ceasefire fades.
For this reason, Foreign Minister Wadephul spoke again with his Israeli counterpart on the phone today and is in close contact with other partners in the region.
